Captain Marvel: Is It Worth The Watch?

Hannah McManus, Staff Writer

In Marvel’s new movie, “Captain Marvel”, the story follows Vers, a Kree Warrior set out in a war between the Kree and Skrulls. During an intense battle, she finds herself falling to Earth, bringing on a whole new battle. During her time on earth, she uncovers things not only about her past, but about the life she is living. With help from Nick Fury, she sets out on a mission to end the war between her people and the enemy Skrulls. This movie is based in 1995, which allows for Marvel to introduce Vers as a key player in their new upcoming movie.

Upon release, “Captain Marvel” received some criticism. The criticism that the movie gained from fans was about the way “Captain Marvel” was marketed. A multitude of promotions for the movie were centered around the fact that this was Marvel’s first female-lead superhero. This caused some controversial discussion. Some fans pointed out that when DC came out with Wonder Woman, they focused less on the female aspect of the movie and more of the movie itself. This differs from “Captain Marvel” because this role was a male role changed to a female role. Marvel could have been using the hard, female centered marketing to inform their fans of the switch within the character. There was a need for the promotions so that none of the fans were caught off guard by this change to the character. “I felt it was a hero movie.” said Mr. Murphy, a teacher at Pennridge High School and a Marvel Fanatic. Murphy felt the movie stayed true to the comics and accomplished its goal, it didn’t have a male vs. female feeling to it.

Along with the marketing of the movie, there were some fans who felt the movie did not live up to its hype. Despite these remarks,  Mr. Murphy was pleasantly surprised after watching the film, feeling it was better than the first Thor movie. With the anticipation of Captain Marvel, another worry from fans was that the actress playing Captain Marvel, Brie Larson, began to receive some hate from Marvel fans for not being involved in the role or not being serious about it. Being the actress for a superhero who is new to the big screen can be a large role to fit. Gia Cappadona, a senior at Pennridge High School and an avid Marvel fan, spoke on this controversy.  “At first I was weary because she had been receiving hate . . . but, I think she did awesome. Truly brought Captain Marvel to life!” Said Gia Cappadona. Despite all this criticism, “Captain Marvel” still made $455 million dollars worldwide in the box office on its opening weekend. That made it the sixth largest global debut in history.

Everyone will always have their own opinions on the movie, but it’s up to the individual to make that opinion for themselves. “Captain Marvel” is in theaters now.  It is a great and entertaining movie that anyone can enjoy, if you are 13 years old or older. If you go to see the movie, stay tuned into until the end of the credits for a sneak peek into Marvels upcoming movie, “The Avengers: End Game”. If you’re looking for something to do and have no ideas, consider going to see “Captain Marvel”, it’s super!
