Netflix is full of amazing tv shows and movies which can cater to anyone’s preference. In the past few years, Netflix has started making their own movies and tv shows which they call Netflix Originals. One Netflix Original that has been growing exponentially in popularity is the tv show “The Umbrella Academy”.  This show follows the lives of seven siblings who all, except one, have special powers. They were all born on the same day to mothers who were not pregnant when the day began. They were then adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, an eccentric billionaire. He raised these kids as his own so he could nurture their powers, and teach them to use their superpowers for good. His intentions were good, but his execution was not. All of the children grew up to be dysfunctional adults. Now as adults, they must all come back together for the funeral of their father. This is where the story begins. Once all of the siblings are back together, they realize that they need to again join forces to save the world from its pending doom. The show continuously follows their efforts to save the world and not let their sibling feuds drama get in the way of their mission.

It is no secret that this show, just like any other show, has fallen victim to intense criticism.  Many critics claim that the show has too much drama. One of the criticisms, is the amount plot twists that occur over the course of the show. This is the type of show that you must sit down and actually watch. This show is not something you turn on for background noise and then expect to understand the entire plot of show.  Many critics also claim that show is messy and unorganized, which makes it hard to follow and understand. Damian Andriulli agreed with this opinion, he said, “At first I didn’t like it in the beginning, and than in the middle of the season I fell in love with it.” Andriulli disliked the beginning of the show, but as the story line became more concrete and easier to follow, he grew to love it.

Despite the complaints about the show, many viewers loved it and its quirky nature. They found that the show was just the right amount of dark humor, violence, and silly bickering between siblings. Most viewers claimed that they have never seen a show portrayed such as this one. It mixes the fantasy of superheroes with the reality of family drama and dealing with dysfunctional siblings. Cathy Smith agreed with most viewers’ opinion of the show; she said, “I was hooked as soon as I started watching it. It is like no other show I have seen before. The combination of action and fantasy is perfect for any viewer to enjoy.” Viewers claim that this show is a breath of fresh air in what seems like a sea of repeats and reruns. Despite the criticisms, the merits of the show keep viewers coming back and wanting more.

This shows only has one season so far. This one season is only 10 episodes long with each episode being around 50 minutes to an hour long. “The Umbrella Academy” has received numerous high ratings, such  as a 8.3 out of 10 on IMDb, 76 percent on rotten tomatoes, and a four-fifths rating on Common Sense Media. The question that every fan is asking is, “When is the second season of ‘The Umbrella Academy’ coming to Netflix.” Netflix has not answered that question and has yet to renew the show for a second season. “The Umbrella Academy” was only released on Feb. 15, 2019. The show is still very young for a confirmation of renewal by Netflix; but with the ratings and viewers opinion of the show,  it would not be shocking if they renewed the show within the next few months.
