Manna’s Provides Meals to Those in Need

Amber Johns, Student Writer

Manna on Main Street, a service organization on 606 Main St, Lansdale PA, provides meals to people on Thanksgiving as they work towards ending hunger in the North Penn area.

Manna’s provides a variety of services to people to work towards their motto and goal, which is “that everyone might be fed”. Some of those services include a food pantry, soup kitchen, emergency financial aid, counseling, referrals, and educational opportunities. Over Thanksgiving, Manna prepared hundreds of Thanksgiving meals, which included hot items like turkey, mashed potatoes, and green beans. There were also separately packaged cold items like cranberry sauce, coleslaw, and pies. These packages were delivered or picked up by people the week before the holidays. Mannas was closed on Thanksgiving Day, but meals were being served across the street at St John’s United Church of Christ.

Overall, Manna has served over 35,636 meals. They have also distributed over 476,585 pounds of groceries to more than 1,026 households in the North Penn area. To help end hunger, Mannas has a free 12-week training called the Common Grounds Food Service Training. This training helps people find jobs by teaching them how to work in food services and develop employment skills. The food made in this program goes back into the market and soup kitchen to provide more meals. To accomplish everything they do, Manna relies on volunteers who donate food, money, and time. They accept non-perishable items, fresh produce, frozen and refrigerated items, prepared food from professional kitchens or caterers, hygiene products, and cleaning products. The kitchen, which provides meals, is open from ten a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m on weekdays. On weekends, they are open from 11 to 12:30 p.m. They are closed on most of the major holidays.
