McOwen Movie Picks

I love film! This summer I made it a goal to watch as many movies as possible. I don’t understand why, but the medium of film really resonated with me. At first I liked the amount of time it takes to develop and tell and story, but as I kept watching, I realized that I really find it interesting how filmmakers are able to use elements such as set design and cinematography to add depth to the story they are telling. Overall film has impacted my life for the better. Here are my top films that I watched this summer:

Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind

Everyone goes through breakups. Breakups are usually messy, complicated, and emotional. This film is able to perfectly capture the emotion that comes with breakups. This film features Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet who both deliver amazing performances. This is the best I’ve ever seen Carrey who is able to pull the viewer in and have them share the same emotions that he’s feeling. This film is extremely relatable and anyone can find similarities in their own life and have the same feelings.

Ex Machina

I love sci-fi because this is the one genre of film that is able to create new worlds and bring new ideas that are just unimaginable. This film is sci-fi but it’s also very topical. It’s about an eccentric tech billionaire Mark Zuckerberg type character who lives in isolation with a new machine he created. This machine is an almost fully developed a.i robot. This movie revolves around the relationship between man and machine as well as man vs. man. This film really resonates with me because I believe that this outcome in the story will soon become a reality.

Parasite

This film came out in 2019 and has already been praised as one of the decade’s best. It was the first all korean film to win not only best picture but best director and best original screenplay at the Oscars. This film was such a rush of experience. It was my first fully subtitled film and I loved it. Reading the text didn’t bother me at all, and I forgot I was even doing that shortly after the movie started. This was my favorite film of 2019 and I think it deserved it’s Best Picture Award at the Oscars. Watch Parasite! Also I reviewed it on my blog found here:
