Happy Earth Day!

Happy belated (one day late) Earth Day! What a great time to go ahead and get on my soapbox and convince every reader to become more eco-friendly. All jokes aside, being more friendly to our planet isn’t always overwhelming. There are so many easy and simple ways we can do our jobs for our Earth. There are so many little actions we can take to make a big difference. In this article, I will share some tips on simple things that you can do at home to treat our planet with the kindness it shows us.

#1 Get Educated

Getting educated on the problem is the first step to helping take care of our planet. This is something that is really important and overlooked. Knowledge is truly power when it comes to bringing awareness to an issue and wanting other people to follow the same mission. There are so many differing opinions, and it is important that you become educated in order to form your own. Some of the media will portray that there is no issue, and before you listen and automatically assume, you should educate yourself and form your own opinion. It is said that 23% of U.S. adults say, “the country has gone too far in its efforts to protect the environment.” (Pew Research Center). I would be interested to know how many of these adults have been influenced by other people’s opinions rather than making their own. Whatever you choose to believe in, as far as how important of an issue polluting our planet is, make sure you are educated. How can you fix a problem that you are not educated on? The topic of being more eco-friendly, and the consequences if we don’t do so, can be very overwhelming. There are so many different resources and specific issues that you can focus on getting to know better. After getting educated, spreading what you know is the next biggest step. Yes, our little actions can make a big difference, but more little actions can make an even bigger difference. If everybody makes simple changes to their lifestyle for the interest of our planet, and becomes more educated, we can be confident that the problem will be closer to getting solved.

#2 Make Simple Changes

It is so easy to get overwhelmed when you talk about all of the damage that is being done to our planet everyday, however, we need to focus on the small things that we can do. The idea that making small changes is better than sitting back and contributing or watching it happen, should be broadcasted everywhere. Small changes could include, switching to metal straws, getting reusable water bottles, eating less meat, or even riding a bike when going to places within close proximity. If you are looking for more ideas, I wrote a whole blog post reviewing an article that would be more than helpful, which I will link below.

#3 Nobody is Perfect

We must remember that no matter how big or small of changes we are making, we are making a difference. There is such a social pressure that makes people feel unless they are going completely “green”, that they are a hypocrite or aren’t making a difference. This is the biggest misconception as far as taking care of our planet goes. Just remember that you are making a difference with every single step that you take, and you are doing more than the person that is being critical of you.

#4 Spread the Word

Spread the word, only if you wish. However, the more people that come together for this cause, the bigger change that will come of it. In today’s society we have access to social media that can change the world in good and bad ways. There are so many different ways to spread the word to other people and inspire them to take action as well. It can all start and end with us, we are the only thing standing in the way of making a big difference in the world. It is our responsibility to this planet to do our part in taking care of it and speak for the earth as it cannot for itself.

There are so many small things that we can do to help take care of our planet and make a difference. There are so many other tips that you can find to help you on your journey if you are in need of a reason or inspiration. However, more than anything, there is no limit to the difference that we can make good or bad, and we choose which of those two options we want to leave this earth having part in. Today more than ever we appreciate the beautiful planet and all the amazing things it does for us, but we must carry this into everyday. Just remember, this is our home and it is our job to take care of it. If you want more information, or need some inspiration, follow my blog!
