Senioritis

There is a lack of motivation rushing through seniors’ veins. It’s like the common cold, infecting hundreds and thousands of kids in schools all around. Some have had this “cold” since their first step into high school as a freshman while others just started showing symptoms this last semester. If you are infected with senioritis just know, you are not alone.

As the finish line comes into sight, it’s easy to just walk the rest of the way. Senior, Blake Stewart says he’ll, “do anything but schoolwork, I’ll even clean if I have to.” Procrastination at its finest. Instead of making excuses and putting other things first, make a schedule. Create an “after-school schedule” listing the things you need to do. Add things that bring you enjoyment too such as working out or listening to music. When you check off all the tasks on your list, reward yourself! You deserve it.

Everyone can relate to the fact that this school year has been rough. Covid has ruined a lot for us. Senior, Richie Shanks said, “I don’t know if it’s senioritis or because a lot of kids just don’t care this year- I think kids just want to be done at that point.” It can be hard keeping that spark of motivation. To keep yourself focused, try changing your studying environment. Go to the park, or a cafe when doing homework. Being in your own house sometimes offers more distractions.

Students aren’t the only ones dealing with the effects of senioritis. It makes it difficult for teachers when they see their students lacking motivation and energy. They are your biggest cheerleaders right now and only want the best for you. Math teacher, Mrs. O’Boyle, gives advice to seniors: “You should always be giving what you have and finish off strong.” Make your teachers proud. They’ve been working hard to make this year as normal as possible for you so the least you can do is make their job easier for them.

Summer is just around the corner. Keep a positive attitude and keep working hard. There are many exciting events seniors have to look forward to. Think about prom and all of the events that have been planned for the seniors. Let those events be the light at the end of this tunnel. Senioritis might be affecting you, but you have the power to not let it control you.
