Imagine a place that’s close to home yet a world away, where items from distant countries are locally available. The World Market brings a taste of home to many people. To those who have moved to America from another country or want a cultural experience, the World Market provides a multitude of foods, furnished items, and other cultural imports. Some areas of the globe that the World Market specializes in include Europe, Asia, Central America, and North America. Diversity and inclusion of many cultures are the main focus of the employees and products. The World Market works with its buyers who travel to over 50 countries. When an item or food that customers like is discovered, they work directly with the craftsperson to bring that product into stores. Beyond its products, World Market also provides a fun yearly scavenger hunt, such as the golden llama competition. There’s an opportunity to get gift cards if the golden llamas are found. Not only is there competition, but there’s a reason to experience culture from other countries.
Our newsgroup was able to experience the World Market firsthand and try some of the products that the market sells. After browsing the many products available, we purchased food from a few different areas of the world, those being Japan, Germany, Italy, and Taiwan. As a group, we were very impressed by the market selection and the items we purchased. Although we couldn’t compare the foods to how they are typically made or consumed, we felt that the variety of foods gave us a look into the cuisine of a few different countries.
The World Market has been held in high regard by Hannah Godshall, a teacher at Pennridge High School. Godshall expressed her love for the World Market and how she can find items unavailable in most local stores. Godshall also stated how “There was a time [she] needed one specific houseware thing that they had on Amazon, but [she] had to wait a few days, so [she] decided to go there, and they had it.” The World Market focuses on representing the different countries and providing affordable products. According to Sophia Orth, an employee at World Market, there is a lot of interesting food that catches people’s attention, and one of her favorite things about the store is the variety of products. Orth also mentioned, “We have many people from the U.K. say that they grew up eating that,” regarding the variety of products that represent the U.K. Not only do people from the U.K. love British food, but local customers do as well. Godshall mentioned her favorite part about the World Market is the selection of British baked goods and that they are typically the main reason she goes there.
Before the World Market became a chain of stores across the United States, it started as a storefront on San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf in the late 1950s. Quickly, it became a destination for people who craved original and handmade items from all over the world. The World Market attracts many people; overall, it is rated 4.6 out of 5 stars.
