As the weather is warming up many are looking for new things to do outside. One of the best outdoor activities is hiking, a mix of physical exercise and amazing views. A hike doesn’t have to be some gargantuan mountain; all it really means is that you’re moving from one place to another and getting your blood pumping. Research shows that hiking is actually very helpful in reducing the risk of heart disease by improving your VO2 max, which represents the oxygen your blood distributes. This applies to any sort of aerobic or cardiovascular exercise. An activity like hiking will also lower your blood pressure, combat diabetes, and obesity, and so much more.
Many frequent hikers say that it lowers their anxiety and depression symptoms and builds strong muscles and bones. Strong bones are very important, especially as you get older, since bones will lose density as you age, which often leads to osteoporosis. Exercising frequently will work your muscles and strengthen bones, and if you wear a backpack it can strengthen your spine, which is highly recommended. Carrying a backpack is important because you’ll need to bring things with you, such as water, snacks, sunscreen, etc. Frequent hiker Ava Agnew said it’s extremely important to stay hydrated, recommending “a few sips of water even if you don’t feel thirsty.” When hiking, the most important thing is to dress appropriately, meaning suitable footwear, dry socks, and layers of clothing. Some other items that aren’t necessities but are recommended are a GPS, knife, and shelter. If you’re going on a difficult hike, these things are definitely needed because you don’t know what will happen out there. You need to be prepared for all situations which is why you should also bring safety items like a flashlight and a first aid kit in case of emergencies.
Before you set out on your journey, you should familiarize yourself with the trail. Knowing your surroundings and which way you’re supposed to go is vital, especially after storms seeing as the wind can blow objects into the path and make it confusing for some. State parks are popular sites with many different trails, such as Nockamixon State Park. Nockamixon has four trail types: a loop, out and backs, point-to-points, and connector trails. Everyone has their own preference, and it’s up to you which you’ll like better. Some trails are more difficult than others depending on incline, path size, elevation, and how well the trail is marked. As a beginner, you definitely want to find a trial that isn’t too long, too steep or narrow, and is marked well. Remember, you can always turn back if you’re not feeling up to finishing the trail; there’s no shame in it! Your experience doesn’t have to be super tiring, it can just be time to relax and enjoy nature. Lisa Russell, a Pennridge teacher who likes to hike, said that she goes hiking because she likes to move around and also loves “seeing nature and birds singing.” Our newsgroup went for a hike for this article at the Sterner Mill and Old High Bridge Trail in Nockamixon State Park. This trail is an out-and-back trail that spans about 2.8 miles and is gorgeous this time of year. With a slight breeze and the warm sun reflecting off the nearby water, it made for a great time and wasn’t too difficult; I just wish we didn’t forget the sunscreen.
