Ice cream and cookies alone are top-tier dessert choices but are taken to the next level when combined. Ice cream sandwiches are not only a fan favorite in America but also in other countries worldwide; there are so many different ways to make them. In an article by ‘Flour and Oats,’ it was said that “On average, 48 ice cream sandwiches are eaten per second in the U.S.” They are a great choice for any age and can be purchased from ice cream shops and grocery stores.
Ice cream sandwiches have been around since 1894 and have evolved over time with unlimited choices. They can even be plant-based by making or purchasing vegan cookies and delicious vegan ice cream. When ice cream sandwiches first appeared, they were made by taking two pieces of sponge cake and putting ice cream in the middle. Since then, ice cream sandwiches have been made using biscuits, cakes, thin cookies, thicker cookies, etc., all different flavors paired with any desired flavor of ice cream. The classic choices are the typical store-bought ice cream sandwich with the soft, thin chocolate cookie with vanilla ice cream, or the homemade chocolate chip cookie and vanilla ice cream. Ice cream sandwiches are also different in each country since each culture has its own unique flavor pallets. Since the options are endless, they allow for such fun and freedom. When interviewing Bella Kocher about ice cream sandwiches, she said, “Ice cream sandwiches are the best way to be creative with your dessert choices since you can mix and match so many different flavors.”
Ice cream expert Delaney Dodge and cookie expert Sara Schmidt have teamed up to bring together the best of their worlds and make the best ice cream sandwich. The Hickory Stick is a local ice cream shop in Perkasie, Pennsylvania, one of Delaney’s favorite places to stop for ice cream. One of her favorite flavors is The Hickory Stick’s most popular ice cream flavor, cappuccino crunch. Cappuccino Crunch is a cappuccino-flavored ice cream with swirls of chocolate fudge and pieces of toffee that add the crunch. Whenever the Hickory Stick has this ice cream out, it goes fast by both younger and older folks. Delaney and Sara revolved their sandwich around this ice cream. Sara researched what flavors pair best with coffee or cappuccino, and her results showed that the top three flavors include chocolate, caramel, and sweet fruit. Since the ice cream already includes fudge and chocolate flavors, Sara created one of Food Network’s top-rated triple chocolate cookie recipes, created by Ellie Krieger, exempting the nuts in the recipe.
After making the cookies, Sara and Delaney worked together to make the perfect ratio of a half scoop of ice cream between two fluffy chocolate cookies. The flavors pair so well together that Amanda Stengel commented,” The ice cream compliments the cookie choice very well; it’s different than you would normally find.” Ice cream sandwiches are so easy to make; you can personalize them to fit anything you want. You always see the classic treats with vanilla ice cream, and you rarely see fun flavors used. It is always good to move out of your comfort zone, try fun new flavors, and deviate from what is normally found.
