The annual April Showers event at Pennridge High School has become much more than just a fundraiser. It’s a yearly celebration of unity and the power of community coming together for a meaningful cause. Organized by Pennridge High School’s Unified Club, this annual tradition raises funds to support Special Olympics athletes and Unified Sports programs across Pennsylvania. This year’s event saw fire companies from Perkasie, Silverdale, Hilltown Township, Sellersville, and Dublin participating, pouring water for students to run through to honor the event’s theme. With a fundraising goal of $10,000, students contributed through $10 ticket purchases and an online fundraising website. In addition, there were performances from Rock U and a DJ, which added to the day’s activities.
Christine Fehnel, one of the event’s organizers, reflected on the growth of April Showers over the years. “Seeing everyone dance and have a great time while contributing to a meaningful cause is the most rewarding part,” she said. The proceeds from the event play a big part in supporting Unified Sports programs across the state, such as bocce and track. The proceeds also establish opportunities for students with disabilities in regional schools. Since the event’s establishment in 2021, it has evolved significantly, with the organizers further refining their approach each year to ensure student participation and success. “The first couple of years were more or less trial and error,” said Fehnel. “We strive to raise as much money as possible while ensuring everyone has fun,” Fehnel added. Pennridge High School Student Liz Dellorusso had a few comments about the fun that was had, “It was an enjoyable day had by all and I would definitely participate again next year.” said Dellorusso. “ It’s also nice to know that the money went to a worthy cause,” added Dellorusso. The Unified Club, which helps provide collaboration between students with and without disability, has been vital in shaping the inclusive and welcoming atmosphere that defines April Showers.
Now in its fourth year, April Showers has established itself as a significant event on the Pennridge community’s calendar that students look forward to every year. Celebrated as one of the best school days of the year, the event brings people together in a fun celebration of giving and belonging. This is a day for students to have fun while contributing to a more significant cause. The fundraiser inspires a sense of purpose and unity, with Pennridge High School students rallying behind the shared goal of supporting Special Olympics athletes and promoting inclusion. Every year, April Showers shows what hard work can accomplish, creating a meaningful experience for the athletes it benefits and leaving a lasting impression on the students who participate in the event yearly.
