How Fast Food Restaurants are Adjusting

Fast Food restaurants have been staying open during the entirety of the virus because they have been deemed essential. However, to maintain the safety of their employees and their customers, many changes and precautions have been made. Many employees are nervous about working everyday, and bringing the virus home to their families. In order to reduce this chance, they have now made drive thru and delivery options all no contact. Also as a result of the virus they have started giving discounts on food, as well as free meals to healthcare workers.

Much of the fast food being delivered is through apps such as grubhub, doordash, and ubereats. The way they do this is by calling the customer when their food has arrived, they will leave the food on the doorstep, this ensures that they will not touch anything on the property besides the food. All drivers also will wear gloves and some will be wearing masks. Some restaurants, such as KFC and chipotle, have also waived their delivery fees during the pandemic. The purpose of the no contact delivery is to create as little human to human contact as possible, it is also put in place to eliminate cross contamination of food.

If delivery is not a possibility for you, the drive thrus are still open and are also no contact. Restaurants such as Chick Fil A have made huge changes to their drive thrus.  All employees are required to wear a mask and gloves, they have also installed handwashing stations outside to make it easy to access for employees. Their customers are also encouraged to complete their payments online on their app. If you choose to pay with a card you are required to swipe your own card, there is also not the option to enter a PIN or get a paper receipt. However, they have also partnered with doordash and grubhub and encourage patrons to order.

Restaurants have also been offering discounted or even free food off their menus during this time of need. Most of the offers include a free delivery, free beverage, or a free dessert item. However, Taco Bell has been offering a free taco on Tuesdays. There are also a number of restaurants that are offering free meals to healthcare workers as a thank you. McDonalds just started giving out free meals to healthcare workers, police officers, paramedics, and firefighters up until May 5. Some restaurants, such as Panera, are also offering family meals at a discounted price. They are offering “the family feast” for just $29, which comes with two half sandwiches, two kid sandwiches, one salad, one family-size mac and cheese, and one whole French baguette.
