Life as a Blue Hen

Located in Newark, Delaware, The University of Delaware is home to over 150 majors and minors and over 250 graduate programs. UD is the largest university in the state of Delaware and has various areas for students to spend leisure time, grab a bite, or have a quiet sit-down place to get work done throughout the campus. North Greene is the heart of UD’s campus. It is home to the Sweeping Lawn – which hosts many outdoor events. These events include a candlelight induction for incoming first-year students after move-in day for the incoming freshman to get to know each other before classes start.

Cutting right through UD’s campus is Newark’s Main Street. This is known as the hub of the college town. Main Street has over 75 restaurants and cafes for students. There is also a bookstore, a grocery store, and a movie theater. One of these student centers is The Trabant Center. The Trabant Center has a large food court, a lounge, and a multipurpose center. In Trabant, event places host films, guest lectures, fashion shows, and student organizations’ performances. Another student center found on campus is the Perkins Student Center. This student center is a walking distance of many residence halls. Perkins has an area called the Hen Zone Green Home, where you can play ping pong, pool, and trivia. There is also an Esports Arena which features a strategy room and a broadcast booth. If a student is ever in need of a late-night event, Perkins is the place to go, as it hosts bingo nights, comedy shows, and concerts from time to time.  An outside area reminiscent of a city part called the Colonnade is very popular with students who want to grab a bite from one of the food carts on Amstel Avenue or head to the four academic buildings surrounding it. The Recitation Hall is known for the visual arts and houses the largest library on campus. It is open until 2 AM on most nights, which is perfect for when students can cram during finals and midterms.

The University of Delaware’s Alethic Complex is located on the South Campus. Nelson’s Athletic Campus is the hub of 36 intramural, 37 clubs, and 21 NCAA Division I Teams. The complex consists of the 18,000-seat football stadium, which holds the Ice Arena, baseball stadium, outdoor pool, field hockey, and soccer fields. There are also a couple of gyms and fitness centers available to students throughout the campus. The East Campus is where the majority of the freshman reside during their first year on campus. The East Campus includes the Harrington Turf, where students hold their events, put up a hammock to take in the sun on a beautiful day on campus, or sit down to study with their friends. The University of Delaware is known more than just for its academic success among students; it is also known for its student life. The University of Delaware provides an inclusive and welcoming environment for all individuals. The social environment and events that take place on campus ensure that students are involved outside of the classroom.
