The debate on whether TikTok, a popular social media app, should be banned has continued for the past few years. Many speak on how the platform is inappropriate and spreads misinformation. Still, the potential banning of this app would be a crucial mistake, considering this platform serves as entertainment but also as a chance for economic growth and free speech on one’s opinions.
People opposed to TikTok often cite concerns about its inappropriate content and believe it should be banned. Yes, these issues are worth considering, and there are reasonable reasons; people overlook the overall impact of what would happen if TikTok were forbidden. TikTok has gained over a billion monthly users and has become a considerable income source for many creators. According to Josh Howarth from Exploding Topics, nearly 48% of TikTok users earn around 15,000 annually, with some earning substantial incomes; seven percent report over $200,000. If TikTok were banned, these influencers would lose their income and other opportunities in the future.
When considering why Tiktok should be banned, a journalist from Kealakehe High School, Rihanna Joaquin, had much to say. “TikTok can be an addictive app and can seriously damage the mental well-being of its users — particularly young people.” Joaquin believes the TikTok algorithm makes young people spend hours of their day on their phones, which will stop them from gaining good social skills. Another reason she spoke about was that the app has many challenges and trends, which can cause problems. “Many young people who have tried these trends have ended up hurting themselves, sometimes even lethally.”
Although these reasons are valid, TikTok also plays a huge role in education and learning. Amy Kroin from FreePress said, “A 2022 survey found that one in four TikTok users use the platform for educational purposes.” TikTok users constantly go onto the app to learn about things they use in the real world, from cooking tips to fitness routines. For instance, a Student at Pennridge High School, Luke Rush, highlighted how Tiktok’s usefulness in obtaining information can be used as an educational tool. “I use TikTok for at least an hour a day. When I first started bulking, I used TikTok to learn what foods would benefit me and how to cook certain foods as well.” Instead of banning TikTok, the focus should be enhancing content and promoting education. Since inappropriate content is on every social media platform, why not censor inappropriate videos and focus on making sure viewers see the educational content more?
Overall, TikTok remains more than just an app; it represents a site for income, learning, and individuals to express themselves. Ensuring this platform is available to many is essential because it gives many economic opportunities and freedom. This app could strengthen the impact on society rather than hurt it, as many sources are trying to feed people.
