What Can We Do Now to Help the Travel Industry Later?

In the height of a pandemic, all unnecessary travel is prohibited, and the travel industry is feeling the negative effects. So in this trying time for businesses, what can be done to relieve some of the pressure on the travel industry once they are allowed to reopen? It seems like there are three fairly effective ways that this could be done.

First, it would be smart for the federal government to offer subsidies to companies in the travel and tourism industry to help lessen these businesses losses at the end of the year. Granting subsidies to businesses would likely work much like the government stimulus package has where each person was given a lump sum, however for large companies, a more effective and equal way to calculate how much money will be enough of a relief, companies should be appraised by looking at their previous financial records or their current assets. Additionally, in order to qualify for a subsidy, companies would have to be based in the U.S. If the federal government were to refuse to create an adequate program, then state governments could allocate funds to serve as subsidies to be divided among travel and tourism businesses in each state.

Another super easy way to help out the travel industry right now is to simply stay at home as much as possible. The sooner this pandemic ends, the sooner businesses can reopen and people can travel again. Not only does staying home keep you safe and healthy, but it prevents you from spreading the virus to others as well. We are truly all in this together and staying home will benefit more than just reopening travel. Staying home will help take the pressure off of hospitals, get people back to work, and allow for small businesses across the country to reopen, in addition to allowing for non-essential travel.

Lastly, the most crucial way that we as individuals can help out the travel industry in this time of crisis is to book vacations. Even though it may not be feasible right now for many people to book a vacation, people who have had their vacations cancelled and refunded in the past few months can get a jump on booking their 2021 vacations easily at home or even rebooking a trip for late this year. Just by getting bookings into their systems, travel and tourism businesses will feel some relief in knowing that there is still a demand for travel that is likely to be strong post-pandemic.

By doing these things now, people can help assure that their favorite travel destinations are financially secure and able to open once they are allowed to. By staying at home, people can take comfort in knowing that they are helping to make sure that they don’t get sick and that others don’t get sick. By booking a vacation, people can give themselves something to look forward to after lockdown and they help relieve the financial stress currently on travel and tourism businesses in hopes of a bright future for travel.
