Calling All Women

In 1913, woman gained the right to vote and 81 years later, in 1994 the Violence Against Women’s Act was passed. This act gave women basic human rights that they deserved for years. The act was reinstated in 2004 and 2013. However in 2020, the act was not reinstated. The Violence Against Women’s Act needs to be reinstated.

This act ensures that victims of sexual harassment, secual assult, rape, and stalking are aided with the help they need. This act provided funding for support for people of any sexual orientation to receive help. The act is named the Violence Against Women’s Act becuase it was geared to supprting females. About one in every five females will be raped in their lifetime. In sexual assault cases eight out of ten victims know the perpetrator. In America every 73 seconds, someone is raped. More statistics like these can be found on the National Sexual Violence Research Center website. I could go on and on about the disgusting facts about violence but it’s important that you also educate yourself as well so that you can make informed opinions.

This act is not political. No. This is an act that gives women basic rights to safety and aid. It’s repulsive to know that it is 2020 that women are still fighting to be safe. Unfortunately a lot of people disagree with the VAWA. It is often criticized for being exclusive because men are raped too. However, this act does not exclude men. In fact it aids people of all different sexual orientations and identifications. It also helps victims who are partners of same-sex marriage. Another opposition often posed says that the VAWA is not making any changes and it is just a waste of money. However, this act is efficient and valuable to victims. From 1994 to 2010 partner violence decreased by 60%. Just by enstating this act, it gives sexual violence victims a voice to feel safe. This act gives people a voice and people to help them feel safe while speaking about their actions. Often times, sexual assult and rape cases are “victims word against perpatratiors word”. What happens when the perpetrator is an upstanding member in the community or a wealthy businessman with money and lawyers. It’s hard to speak up when you feel powerless against the perpetrator. The VAWA gives victims power to stand up and speak out about their attack. This act also brings awareness to the atrocities surrounding sexual crimes. Something has got to change and it won’t happen by sitting around and saying goodbye to the VAWA.
