What Journalism Has Taught Me

One of my favorite classes I have taken throughout my time at Pennridge High School was Journalism. Even with the current worldwide pandemic, this class has been both extremely informative and entertaining as you learn the importance of laws and ethics, how to write a newspaper article, and the impact of social media in Journalism. This class is engaging with projects, discussions, and group work that has helped prepare me for college and future jobs. One unit of this class that I learned a lot from was newsgroups. This unit was critical as I got to experience working with people to write an article by a specific deadline, just like a real newsgroup setting. In life, we’ll sometimes have to work with people who we may not like, but communication is always key. Working in these newsgroups has taught me how to communicate with my group members and assign work evenly to get the article written efficiently. One part of writing articles and gathering the information required, is interviewing people related to the topic.

In Journalism, I’ve learned everything there is to know on proper interview etiquette and, as a public relations major, I can use this knowledge for future interviews for possible job or internship opportunities. Similar to this,  The social media promotion I did for my beat, was not only beneficial for this project, but also for the future as well due to my major. This particular major involves scoring many internships where social media management and the creation of a website could be part of the job. With the skills I’ve learned through completing this project, I can apply my knowledge of using various social media platforms and a website to my major in college and future jobs. From taking Journalism, this course has taught me a variety of skills, including researching, interviewing, writing, promoting, reporting and has also provided me with more appreciation for this field and the work involved.
