Are Students Being Properly Prepared for Life After Schooling?

It is easy to say that schools provide all of their students with a structured and a well-rounded education, but does that mean that they are getting ready and prepared for their lives outside of the classroom? It is said that “65 percent of current high school students desire more demanding and interesting courses” according to the National Governors Association.

There has been a number of acts and new ways put in place to boost the student performances, like the No Child Left Behind Act, which is used to increase the effectiveness on student testing and their progress, but the good intentions lead to the stress of standardized testing and students being more focused on their score and memorizing materials for the exams then actually learning and taking in the information. When it comes to real world preparation, the St. Petersburg Times stated that schools “have been delivering education the same way since public education began in the mid-1800’s.”, ultimately showing that the education system needs to be reinvented to teach today’s generation in a more effective way.

High school education is essential for a student’s development. If the schooling systems made small, but necessary, changes to aid the students in their future success, it would make all of the difference. For instance, think of a math class, adding in additional information to lessons like a run down of economics or teaching students how to manage their money can be very useful to a student who is about to graduate and move onto the real world.
