Legalization of Recreational Marijuana

Should Marijuana be legalized for recreational use? In 2017, “55 million residents [in the United States] reported using marijuana” (Mills). This shows that more people use marijuana than most people think. Marijuana should be legalized recreationally because of its ability to benefit the user and community. Marijuana has many benefits for people and the community. It can help people with certain disorders. It can also relax and calm the mind. Marijuana becoming legal for recreational use would also create more jobs in the community which would boost the economy.

Marijuana is known for its calming aspects. It can work as a de-stressing agent that can benefit some when they are stressed out or anxious. Marijuana can also help when someone is stressed out with schoolwork or has a great number of things to do. “Scientists at Washington State University published a study in the Journal of Affective Disorders that found that smoking cannabis can significantly reduce self-reported levels of depression, anxiety, and stress…”, according to William Meek.

More jobs can be created due to the legalization of recreational marijuana. Creating these jobs would open a new job industry and help the unemployment rate. According to Statista, “In November 2020, the national unemployment level of the United States stood at about 10.74 million unemployed persons.” Creating these jobs will help make the large unemployment rate become smaller. Statista table shows, “… it is estimated that 283,422 new jobs could be created”.  Creating new jobs will not just help the unemployment rate but can also help better the economy overall.

Legalizing Recreational use of Marijuana will help the people and the community. People who suffer from anxiety or are extremely stressed out will benefit. People who have a lot on their plate and need to relax will be benefited. The community will have more jobs for people to work. The economy will also become better in the community.
