How Safe is Pennridge High School?

Pennridge High School needs to consider Alice drills and other safety measures when inviting over a thousand students into a school. In today’s day in age, no school could ever be too prepared for the event that an intruder or active shooter was to walk into the building. During the year 2022, there were a total of 51 school shooting incidents which resulted in 39 people being killed, 32o them children or students, and only seven adults and staff and 101 other persons injured.
When considering this thought, Pennridge High School only does two Alice drills a year to prepare for a situation like this, when many students don’t take them seriously. When asked how she felt about this, student Giovanna De Paula answered, “I don’t think that we will ever be fully prepared since none of us have ever been through this, but if the school implicated more safety drills, it would certainly help.” With this student’s reaction, you can tell there needs to be more.
Next to every classroom door in the building, a string ties to the door handle to ensure that no one can get in. History teacher Mike Kuhns states, “I never thought the sting contraption was enough, but it was the best it could do at the time it was placed in the classrooms.” Considering the hundreds of students in this building, Pennridge needs to work more to make these lives safer. Between the 2019 and 2020 school years, seventy-five shootings have occurred in mainly high schools, and many have been injured or killed. School shootings can take place anytime and anywhere. It is never too late to be prepared for an incident we all pray will never happen to us or anyone.
