More Than Just a Movie: “Tangled”

A floating lantern festival.

The floating lanterns have become a key symbol in the famous Disney movie “Tangled.” In the film, the lanterns symbolize hope and a guidance home for the lost princess, Rapunzel. The movie is based on a girl with long, golden hair with magical healing powers. The floating lanterns were released every year on Rapunzel’s birthday, and after Rapunzel was kidnapped, the lanterns were meant to guide the princess home. This movie has a significant impact on current teenagers in high school because the movie came out when they were in elementary school. Lantern festivals have become increasingly popular throughout the U.S. since the release of the 2010 film. We even see prom themes based on the movie and its’ lanterns. Lantern festivals are something that everyone should visit at least once, and those in the Bucks County Area have one option close to home.

New York/New Jersey has been holding water lantern festivals since 2017. The coming festival is on July 19 and 20 at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 10:30 p.m. This water lantern festival is a family-friendly event that everyone can share. Along with the lanterns, there are food trucks and music to enjoy. You can create memories with friends, families, and people you have just met. The lanterns symbolize healing, reflection, connection, love, and setting goals, and are something that people of all ages can enjoy and relate to. Maria Lera-Lozano has seen the movie “Tangled” and said the movie made her want to see a lantern festival. Lera-Lozano said, “I think it would be a super cool experience and extremely pretty.” The Water Lantern Festival in New York/New Jersey is the perfect place to experience lantern lighting on a summer day, and it looks like a scene straight from the movie “Tangled.”
Because of the beautiful setting the lanterns create, high schools throughout America have themed their proms based on the movie “Tangled” and its floating lights. During the 2021-2022 school year, the Pennridge High School Junior Prom had a “Tangled” themed prom. Kaitlyn McBride attended the 2021-2022 Pennridge Junior Prom and said, “I liked the theme of the prom. It wasn’t really specifically related to the movie, but there were some similarities.” The movie “Tangled” is something that almost all current high school students are familiar with and is an easy movie to represent in a prom setting using the iconic lanterns featured in the film.

When people think of the movie “Tangled,” the floating lights are what most picture in their minds, but they don’t know they can experience something like this in real life. If you want something to do this summer, go to the Water Lantern Festival in New Jersey for a movie-like experience.
