Color Me Mine, founded in 1991 by Robin Monroe and Josh Culver, was created with one goal in mind: to make the traditional ceramics studio more accessible and inviting for everyone with no artistic experience required. What began as a family-oriented concept in New Orleans has since grown into an international franchise with over 130 locations across the United States, Canada, Costa Rica, and the Philippines. Now operating under its parent company, Painting with a Twist, Color Me Mine continues to offer a hands-on, low-pressure art experience where customers can relax, experiment, and create.
The Montgomeryville location embraces that mission with a laid-back, walk-in atmosphere where reservations aren’t required. The studio also hosts field trips, private events, and parties, making it a popular spot for families, friend groups, and anyone looking for a creative outing. Upon arrival, customers choose from a wide variety of blank ceramics pieces displayed on the walls, typically around $20 on average, and pay an $8 studio fee that covers paint, glazing, firing, and unlimited time to work.
Behind the scenes, the staff plays a big role in bringing each piece to life. One worker shared that although they didn’t have much ceramics experience before starting, the studio has taught them everything from technique to the science of firing pottery. “We dip pieces in a clear glaze and fire them in a kiln that heats to about 1,800 degrees,” they explained. “It takes about two weeks to get pottery back because we’re always working on different pieces.” The glaze not only protects the artwork, but also locks in the colors that the customers carefully paint.
Employees are also hands-on when it comes to helping customers feel confident in their designs. “We can teach different brush strokes or other techniques to help them achieve what they want,” the worker said. “If someone asks for help painting, we’re able to jump in and create a really good environment.”
Customers appreciate that supportive atmosphere. One first-time visitor said they stopped in simply “to have a fun, unique experience,” and the process has been even better than expected. “It’s been fun to pick the colors and be able to paint whatever I want,” they said, adding that the staff has been “very helpful, showing us what we can do with different techniques.” They said they would “definitely” recommend Color Me Mine to friends.
With its approachable design, friendly guidance, and emphasis on creativity over perfection, Color Me Mine continues to offer the same experience its founders imagined more than 30 years ago: one where anyone, at any age or skill level, can sit down, pick up a brush, and leave with something they’re proud of.
