With the rapid increase of clothing prices, it seems people are turning to the next best thing behind new clothing. Thrift. In recent years, thrifting has become a sensation. It’s an activity for anyone and everyone; a quick way to get cheap, nice clothes and the lingering possibility of digging up lost treasures worth boatloads of money. The secondhand clothing industry is expected to grow 3 times faster than any other branch of the clothing market, and this growth is happening in real time right in front of our eyes. Around 16 to 18 percent of Americans are shopping in thrift stores, contributing $4 billion to the apparel industry.
There are many appeals to thrifting and why it is such a hot new trend within Gen Z. Vincent Sordini, a former Pennridge student says, “the cheapness appeals to me.” By going to thrift stores, you can upgrade your whole closet for a reasonable cost. Gen Z has increased the popularity of thrifting because of the cost effectiveness and having the “treasure hunt” feeling of being able to find unique clothes. Social media also plays a big factor in this thrifting ‘sensation.’ Kathryn Fuchs, a student at Pennridge Highschool says that “people on social media who find nice things” helps thrifting look more appealing to her. Social media is a way to show cool clothes that you can find for such a low price compared to other mainstream clothing stores.
The two biggest thrift stores in Souderton, especially the new Liberty thrift, have gotten more popular over the years. Both stores provide unique and fun experiences while shopping and a large variety of anything you need. Care and Share the ‘original’ thrift store that was around before Liberty has multiple sections including furniture, bookstore, and even miscellaneous items with products more than 50% off of normal mainstream store products. Liberty Thrift offers the same experience with appliances, furniture, clothes, miscellaneous items, etc. Comparing the two stores, Liberty has lower prices than Care and Share but Care and Share has more of a variety and offers more products. Care and share also offers different sales on different days of the week which may make it more ‘expensive.’ Both are extremely cost effective and still offer a lot of options. Liberty has changed the dynamic of Souderton because it now offers new places for people to shop and get cheap and good quality clothes. If you are looking to get new clothes but don’t want to spend a lot of money. Liberty and Care and Share are some of the best stores to stop by to improve your style at a low cost.
The world of thrifting is ever-growing, with new incentives to thrift being rolled out constantly across the country. At Red Racks thrift store in Missouri, a percentage of profits are donated to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) charity. With causes like this, people will surely continue to make their way to their local thrift stores and keep taking advantage of the low costs and unique finds. The world is always changing, and in the world of apparel, the next big era will belong to second-hand sellers and thrift stores.
