There are multiple ways to be an effective leader, whether that is in an organization, in a group of people, or in any type of setting. There are a multitude of steps someone can take to put their best foot forward and become a successful and respected leader.
Often, when thinking of leadership, people’s minds think of official leaders like presidents or managers of companies. These are definitely big positions and well-respected leadership opportunities but there are multiple other smaller kinds that are also extremely important throughout society.
Leaders are important because they help multiple people, whether individuals or a group, to work together and get things done. Leaders can realize there is something bigger than just themselves and are willing to help everyone live up to their full potential and get what needs to be done. A couple of attributes that could contribute to being one of these respected leaders could be self-awareness, empathy and communication.
Being self-aware
Self-awareness is immensely important as a contribution to being a leader. This is the process of realizing how your actions may affect others. A common example of this is the idea of thinking before you speak. Not only is self-awareness the idea of thinking about how your actions impact others, it’s also about accountability. When it comes to criticism and actions, it’s important to understand when you make a mistake and how you can learn and grow from it. Mason Bumpers, the class of 2028 student council president, said, “every effective leader should be accountable and know when they are in the wrong. They should be able to see the perspective of the people that they are leading so they can make educated decisions for them.” If someone lacks accountability, this could harm what the intended goal is. Self-awareness helps create better bonds and shows authenticity. It gives a leader an opportunity to be more engaged with the group and create trust.
It is also very important to take criticism constructively. Giving feedback and receiving feedback are inevitable in a leadership role. Floyd Gladwell, the manufacturing manager at Compucraft Fabricators, said, “Some people don’t like feedback. With being a leader you have to be aware that employees will sometimes dislike you simply because you are a leader – You have to take their feedback and look at what is relevant and what is not relevant. Apply what is relevant and improve.” Great leaders consider every constructive comment to its fullest.
Having empathy
Another vital part of leadership is having empathy. Empathy is the realization of others’ feelings and connecting with them. Having empathy creates stronger and closer relationships with the people around you. It allows you to open up and understand what the group needs to help them achieve their goal.
Looking at other people’s perspectives and understanding how everyone feels is the embodiment of empathy. As a leader it is important to consider everyone’s feelings as if they were your own. Mason bumpers stated, “when people are disagreeing I try to hear both sides out. I’ll see where they are coming from and I’ll find a compromise between them. That’s why I try to see things from their perspective. It makes it easier to compromise.”
With empathy also comes flexibility. In a leadership position, it is important to realize that there may be times that something doesn’t go according to plan and needs to be changed. These can often be related because if someone is not there due to an unforeseen circumstance. It is often ideal to continue to work with what you have been given and work around it. This can show that someone is confident in their leadership style and may be easier to create a bond with.
Rynson Kremer, the band leader of Sell By Yesterday, stated, “as a leader you have to go with the flow. You can’t set your mind on a specific thing you think is right. You have to understand that things may change. You have to be adaptable.” Flexibility and empathy are key characteristics leaders need in order to get ideal goals done.
Communication is key
Communication is one of the most important aspects of being a leader. Communication baseline is the ability to talk to others. When it comes to being a leader, communication is often related to being able to effectively talk to others, stating what needs to be done in a clear and concise way. Communication is another way to show people that you are available for them. It helps state what you expect and how people should go forth and apply that to get the common goal done. This opens many connections within the organization or group, but also with outside sources as well.
Honesty is one part of communication. Honesty is a vulnerable time for someone but allows connections to grow stronger. If a leader can effectively communicate and be honest with their group, this is the perfect steppingstone to a successful leader. Communication is the main overall idea with leadership. It includes things like flexibility, accountability and the other ideas mentioned. Being able to communicate not only helps you improve, but it is crucial for the people around you to grow. Without leadership, people may not understand what they are doing is wrong and will never grow from it. Floyd Gladwell said, “I gain the trust of my employees by including them in what’s going on and tell them the truth. I’m honest when it comes to giving them feedback on their performance – I’m able to give them feedback even if they don’t like it.” Growth is an immense part of being a leader and being able to see that in others.
Communication not only helps you be a leader, but it is so crucial and important for life overall. Communication is a necessity to be able to talk to others and grow bonds and relationships. It is the driving force of society. Having great communication skills opens many doors in life. Communication isn’t only talking either. It’s being able to express yourself in different ways for people to understand you.
Being a leader takes time. Having an idea of some of the most important leadership qualities can make an impact. It can grow your own mindset or potentially change someone else’s. Creating a safe environment for people to grow and learn is a great starting point for someone. Leadership is so much more than just being in charge. It’s about changing people’s futures and how they think.
