Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. As centuries go by, it is still a really popular holiday, but it has become more modern through technological advancements, cultural shifts, and commercialization beginning in the 19th century. Key factors of the modern influence of Christmas include gift giving, commercialism and new traditions. Today, Christmas is mainly known for the tradition of gift-giving and spending time with family. Although, the new trends of this generation have dimmed out the spirit of Christmas. The colorful lights and decorations have turned into a beige wave. Many people now want to fit in with a modern aesthetic with beige, white lights because it’s “aesthetic.” The childhood of older generations has been taken over by the fight for aesthetics instead of the true joy of the holiday, and they have words to say about the change.
Bill, a worker at a hot chocolate stand at Peddlers Village said, “When I was kid we didn’t have cell phones, tech is the biggest thing.” He believes due to the recent advancements in technology and influence of social media, the winter season has lost its true value and fun. This is a true issue in today’s society, as many characteristics of Christmas are being replaced. For example, handmade cards used to be popular, while now they are substituted by commercial cards and e-cards. Besides this, technology has brought many advantages. When family can’t be together during the holidays, a call can easily be made.
Another way Christmas has changed is the focus. Lisa Walters, a local mom and lover of Christmas, said “I think our society has put more emphasis on the stuff and getting things and the commercialism of the holiday versus what it’s really about.” Whether you’re religious or not, the center should not be on what presents you will receive or the trends of the month. Lisa went on to say, “but I believe it’s starting to switch back. Shifting back to emphasis on family and slowing down.” This society is starting to see the true meaning of Christmas, whether you believe that’s the birth of Jesus or celebrating with friends and family.
Christmas is slowly changing into a consumerist holiday with the main aspects being shopping and companies giving special offers to boost sales. Also, previously mentioned, the decorations are being valued as aesthetics over fun lights. If you feel the want to change this, maybe make more handmade gifts. Spend more time with your family. Put up the gaudy lights. Among all of this, whether you have a beige color scheme or an eighties inspired house, make sure the focus is on the true meaning of Christmas.
