Members enjoying bread at the February 7th meeting

Calling all bakers! Since the start of the 2019-2020 school year, a new club, The Bread and Breakfast Club, has been introduced to the high school by current senior, Zoë Swartley. Perfect for those who enjoy baking or who are simply interested in the matter. The club is very relaxed with meetings held in Mrs. Parkes’ room on the first Friday of every month. Members are asked to bake bread or a bread-like breakfast food at home and then bring it to school to share alongside their peer’s creations. Participation in the club is an excellent way to start any old Friday morning, and it will surely improve any prior baking skills.

“It all began as a joke” says Lydia Darrah, an original member of the club, “Over the summer of our junior year during one of our late-night sleepover chats, you know, the times when everything is funny and all ideas seem brilliant my friends and I talked about having a monthly get-together in which we try a new bread. Little did we know we’d actually follow through and it’d eventually evolve into its own club”. It started out just within the small friend group: Zoë, Phoebe, Becca, Sam, and Lydia. On the first Friday of every month, they’d come together in the morning to share and enjoy bread together in the cafeteria. Soon enough, other students became aware of the occasion as leftovers were often distributed during other classes. “I can remember how excited my calculus class would get every time I’d walk in with a loaf of bread” says Swartley. Towards the end of the 2018-2019 school year, Bread club was in the works of becoming official; a proposal sheet was given to administration and chemistry teacher Mrs. Parkes agreed to be the advisor. The following school year, Bread club made it to the club list and is still going strong!

The main purpose of the club is to share the joy of baking with others and to encourage those who normally wouldn’t bake to get involved. When asked why students should join Bread club, advisor Mrs. Parkes replied, “It gives you an opportunity to try something new, learn new skills, and you get to meet new people.” In response to the same question, club member Ryan Pecharo shared the same points and added that “You get to share what you know about baking with others, and more members means more bread for sampling!” Both also mentioned how fun making and eating different breads is, so the highlight of the club, clearly, is getting to sample everyone’s creations. Over the course of the club, there have been countless unique contributions ranging everywhere from breads and muffins, to scones and other pastries. “One of my favorite breads was the pumpkin cream cheese swirl bread,” member Emma Pecharo said, “I couldn’t get over how good it was!” At the recent February 7th meeting, members were seen gathered around in Mrs. Parkes room conversing and enjoying one another’s bread. Lemon blueberry, pretzel focaccia, and apple breakfast were among the favorite breads of the meet.

All are welcome to bring bread to the clubskill or no skill. Undeniably, it is a wholesome crew of passionate bakers who’d love to welcome you to the family!
