Journalism Can Help Shape You

Journalism, what does that word mean to you? For me, I always thought Journalism is about interviewing people and writing tiresome articles. If you have not taken Journalism yet, I highly encourage you to take it. You do not have to be a “writer” or “professional” of some sort. In my experience, choosing this class was worth it as it opened my mind, enhanced my thoughts, creativity, and knowledge. With the help of an amazing teacher, Nicole Gordienko, she taught and lead each and everyone of us to a wider, brighter path to this Journalism world. Through this class, I have gained new understandings of Journalism. That dull Journalism world that I have always assumed is a myth. As a Journalism student, I can tell honestly tell you, it is not always easy.

Over this course, in some parts, I felt like I was walking over a thin rope. A thin rope that was hanging over a 5,000 feet tall building, attached to another tall building hundreds of miles away, and my main objective was to walk myself to that other building without falling. I have always felt comfortable in my bubble, I did not think this class would pull me out of my own bubble, but Journalism did it. Countless times, I had to unwillingly force myself to do things that I disliked. Presenting in front of class, which made my heart drop a few times. Interviewing the top authorities in this school, something that I never thought I would consider doing. If you are a shy student, taking this class will help you overcome your fears. Fears that are preventing you from doing so many other wonderful activities.

During my experience of taking this course, I have learned that Journalism can help shape the world into a better place, along with shaping you into a better individual. In this world, there are inexhaustible amounts of issues that I believe can be reduced. Issues like poverty, discrimination, and climate change, can be reduced with the use of Journalism. All it takes is to inform or even motivate the audience using influential words. The use of images may also be used to impact more than millions of people worldwide. It is only if you know how to choose your words precisely and cautiously.

This course can guide you to understand yourself, the society, enhance your passion, your critical thinking skills, and boost your confidence level. Taking this course helped me tackle many of my fears, and that is what has made me stronger. The comparison between myself now and before taking this course is very distinct. I feel like a freshly improved person now. In the future, I will use this knowledge to do better and somehow help people to improve themselves as well. I have learned tremendously and so can you. I believe anyone can better the world using Journalism.
