Finding Confidence Through Journalism

You may not want to be a Journalist or a writer of any sort. Maybe you hate literature and everything that has to do with it. But the things you learn in Mrs. Gordienko’s class are things that can apply to life outside of school. You learn skills that will apply to getting jobs, emailing your boss, attending interviews etc.

When I joined journalism, I was less than enthusiastic about it. Non-fiction is my least favorite form of writing and that’s what Journalism is all about. I can hear you mumble to yourself, “Then why did you take it?” Long story short, I was pressured into taking it. But still, I bit my tongue and put some effort into the course. With help and encouragement from Mrs. Gordienko, I grew to like the class and I can say I grew as a person as well.

If any of you know me personally, I’m not the most sociable person. In the beginning, this class was a nightmare for me. Having to take part in interviews, having to conduct interviews, having to present projects to the class. On multiple occasions, I considered taking the easy way out and just failing out of the class. Over time, the honest feedback I got from Mrs. Gordienko and my peers gradually built up confidence in myself and my work. In Journalism everyone is equal and everyone is given a chance.

Sometimes there are things in life you don’t want to do. In Mrs. Gordienko’s Journalism class you learn that those things you don’t want to do aren’t always a bad thing. Sometimes you just have to suck it up and do it, and sometimes it changes your life. Yes, I can say with confidence, this class changed my life; it definitely gave me the confidence I’m going to need for my next chapter in life. I’m sure you’ll leave Journalism with some skill or personal improvement that’ll stick with you as you head off into the world.
