A Change in Student Testing Needs to be Made

Traditional methods of testing are largely ineffective and need to change in order to maximize student’s understanding of the content. For traditional tests, students rely on memorization rather than understanding. Researchers explain how using projects and critical thinking assignments are better measures of a student’s knowledge because it forces the student to understand the material. For many students, tests also create anxiety that hinders their ability to do well. A study shows how quizzes taken periodically after learning content are more effective in helping students retain information rather than large tests.

Open note tests are another form of testing that should be considered. A study done by the CBE Life Sciences Education stated that “making all exams open note would provide motivation for the instructors to create exams focused on higher-order thinking.” Some would argue that open note testing would lead students to slack, but instead, students would have to work harder to take in-depth notes and change their studying habits. The tests and quizzes need to be designed with challenging questions that focus on critical thinking. PHS student Emily Bolger explains how in the real world you are encouraged to use your sources and communicate with others.

Traditional tests focus too much on memorization and are designed to manipulate a student’s thought process by including questions or answers that are misleading. To ensure students receive the quality education they deserve, a change needs to be made.
