A Culture of Social Media

Teens in the twenty-first century have created a culture where it depends upon the idea of social media. We interact with society through a screen to communicate and talk to people near and far.  It is the main culprit for the total screen time spent on the phone, it consumes life.

Social Media has affected society since it was established. Teens today post their lives on social media, sometimes sharing too much information creating harm. One of the harms that many face is cyberbullying, people tend to use their screens as a form of protection and become monsters by making nasty comments they would not have the courage to say face-to-face. In the United States, 10 out of 100 teens suffer from a type of eating disorder a big influence is caused by social media. The media shapes the image of the “ideal body type” and many strive to create this “perfect” yet unrealistic lifestyle for themselves.

Life relies on social media and without it, we would have no way to connect with others. With apps there are ways to connect with others and ways to find a significant other or even friends. Today people use apps to bring awareness to issues around the world, some use them to tell their stories on eating issues, mental illness, etc. The positives are people try to connect with others and can help them through their own life experiences.

A way to fix this problem of social media is to limit time on your phone allowing you to realize how much more there is to life. If that doesn’t sound appealing to you, try taking breaks, deleting each app for two weeks at a time. Life is so beautiful once you take the time to look at the real world round you.
