Big Ape and Radioactive Lizard Brawl on HBO Max

On the last day of the month of March, 2021’s biggest movie so far, Godzilla Vs. Kong released. On release, people speculated that viewership would be about average for the fourth movie in the series, but within its first week, the movie became the highest-grossing film in the US during the pandemic. On that topic, the pandemic has hit the movie industry hard, especially with movie theaters, so in order to increase viewership, the movie premiered on HBO Max, as well as in movie theaters. What’s most impressive about the release is that even with it coming out on HBO Max, the box office made $70 million off of the film in only its first week.

What can be said about the impressive release cannot be said about the ratings, however. Critics of the movie had different opinions on the movie, with IMDb giving the showing a 6.5/10 and Rotten Tomatoes critics giving a 75% rating. The audience on Rotten Tomatoes felt that it was deserving of a 91%. Sebastian Tablas, 7, gave his opinion on the movie saying “I really liked it because Godzilla and the robot Godzilla were epic.” Sebastian saw the show on HBO Max and when asked if he would rather see it on the big screen he described how the movie theater is cool because they have popcorn and slushies, though he never stated a preference.

One thing that most viewers I spoke to agreed upon was that the plot was uninteresting and annoying to follow. Everyone had a similar stance on the movie, in that they did not care in the slightest about the actors or any sort of reason for the fight. In an interview with Gavin Buiting, 18, he said “The fighting was the best part; nobody cares about the plot” which was the general consensus with everybody else who was asked about the plot. Buiting agreed that the movie was deserving of a 91% as seen on Rotten Tomatoes, as someone who wasn’t worried about the plot, though he couldn’t say good things about the ending. He felt lied to when no true winner was decided. Though no winner was decided he is adamant in the fact that King Kong came out victorious saying “Kingus won; there’s no doubt about it.”
