Whats New On Hulu?

Evelyn Kern, Student Writer

When quarantine started, we were all looking for things to pass the time. I started watching a lot of shows that had been sitting on my lists. One of those shows was Everything’s Gonna Be Okay by Josh Thomas on Hulu. If you’re looking for a new show to get into or are wondering if it is worth watching, you came to the right place.

Everything’s Gonna Be Okay is about a man named Nicholas, who comes to America to visit his father and his half-sisters, Genevieve and Matilda. When he comes to visit, their dad passes away. Nicholas is left with a couple of options but chooses to take care of his half-sisters who have no one. The show follows the family through their struggles with puberty, autism, being queer, and more. Each episode is about 30 minutes long and each episode tackles a new issue. Whether you can relate to the issues or not, the characters are nothing short of entertaining. The older sister, Matilda, is played by Kayla Cromer, an actress with autism. Her story follows her growing up and living as a neurodivergent adult. The youngest, Genevieve, played by Maeve Press, is going through middle school in California. This brings comedic relief and introduces issues that a lot of viewers can relate to. The main character, Nicholas, is played by the creator of the show, Josh Thomas. Nicholas is a gay man in his 20s raising two teenaged girls. The characters mesh to create a very sentimental and funny dynamic.

If you won’t take my recommendation, I have others! Junior Alex Wensel watched the first season when it was released in January 2020. When asked if she enjoyed the show, she described it as “bingeable”, saying that she would even watch it again. She commented on authenticity saying, “I can’t speak on the authenticity of every topic that the show covered but none of it seemed overdone or exaggerated, it just seems like interesting people dealing with life issues.”

Subreddit r/lgbt loved the show for its portrayal of queer people and asexuality. Neurodivergent viewers loved that the show included neurodivergent actors for multiple characters. Josh Thomas commented on his inclusion of queer people and people with ASD saying that he didn’t want to make a social statement, he just thought that their stories were interesting and worth sharing.

If you’re looking for a new show to binge on, season 1 of Everythings Gonna Be Okay is out on Hulu, and season 2 is being released weekly. If you watch the show or have seen it already, leave a comment telling us if you would recommend it!
