Adopt, Don’t Shop: The Truth Behind the Shut Doors

Behind the shut doors of puppy mills are dozens of rancid tiny dog cages. Filled with multiple puppies that sit in their own filth while piled on their siblings and wait to be sold to a corporate brand. A news article described that “one dog had bleeding abscesses that trickles down onto the cage below and the other had a missing ear” it was inhumane treatment. The puppies are stripped from their mom at birth, only seen as a type of profit for the breeder. For years, animal rights activist has been fighting to shut down puppy mills and have gotten many rules changed, but still, the authorities don’t act on anything and it’s time to shut the mills down.

Some might argue “all dogs deserve loving homes, no matter where they came from”, but they are the reason that puppy mills are still functioning. 99 percent of puppies in pet stores come from mills. From the condition they are bred and bought from, they most likely have many underlying conditions. The lifespan of a rescued dog is much longer than an adopted dog. There is even scientific evidence that rescued dogs have better genetic health versus puppy mill puppies. If people stop going to pet stores or breeders and instead go to a local pound, it will be saving thousands of dogs. The mills only work for profit, so we need to cut it off.

A female dog is their main source of breeding, they force breed her until she can’t anymore, and once that happens, she is worthless, and they kill her. One reporter writes “rather than treating the [sick] dogs, the brothers shot all of them and closed the kennel.” They don’t put the animals down or allow them to live out their years, they remove them all together, making sure they don’t have to waste any profit. In fact, until the law is changed “kennel owners may continue to kill dogs”. It is an endless cycle of abuse, breeding and money greed and the way to stop the cycle: adopt, don’t shop.
