Studies have shown that high-quality library programs at schools correlate to better student achievement regardless of the socioeconomic status of the community. Even with that research, one in eight schools in the U.K doesn’t have a library. The library at Pennridge High School is home to many great books and important resources. Lisa Maderic, the school librarian, helps students in many different ways. She says, “I hope to make it a more flexible space. The furniture is standard but I hope to make it more flexible whether it’s for a small group, large group or, whatever anybody wants to use. I impact the community by buying community resources that students find enjoyable. I’m constantly updating the collections so students can find the best works.”

During covid, the number of students in the library had limited capacity but now it has gone back up. We have many programs for research and fun. On our Library website, we have the card catalog, ebooks, and databases. We also have access to magazine and newspaper articles from around the state of Pennsylvania through Access PA. The Library also has fun activities such as Library contests several times a year and stress-relieving games such as connect four and Uno. Anything you might need, all you need to do is ask us or contact the Library.

Avery Stewart, a student at Pennridge, said she “has only been to the library four times, only to use their printer.” She also said, “I am not aware of the resources the library has to offer.” If libraries are so beneficial why are they disappearing? In New Jersey school libraries are being used to save money to fund other things like sports teams. Studies show that libraries “Increase critical thinking” and “are critical for the developmental growth of children.” They also increase standardized test scores. Here at Pennridge, the back of the school library is going to be turned into offices for administrators this summer. This will most likely happen to leave students with fewer places to sit and ultimately lower standardized tests.
