In only his third year coaching here at Pennridge high school for track and field, coach Carl Tyce has built a community rooted in trust, accountability, and care where every athlete feels seen both on and off the track. Drawing on lessons learned from his own mentors, Tyce combines care and discipline to create a team where hard work, unity, and character come before medals.
When Carl Tyce took over as head coach, his goal wasn’t just to win meets but to help students grow as athletes. As a former mid- distance runner at DeSales University, Tyce knows the demands of competitive athletics and brings that knowledge into his coaching. He has shared that not only does he make sure all of his athletes are performing their best physically but they are also ok mentally. He stated that during his time as a runner he dealt with stress and anxiety before meets so he makes sure all of his athletes are cared for. His coaching style was shaped most by two mentors with very different styles. One coach focused on personal relationships, taking time to connect with every athlete. While the other was demanding, with high standards and relentless expectations.
Tyce emphasized the importance of teamwork and community within the sport to help support and motivate one another. “You need to have that family camaraderie to make a team successful,” he explained. He believes that to be able to improve you need to be surrounded by positive teammates to cheer each other on, pick each other up after tough races, and celebrate improvement together.
When asked what message he hopes his athletes carry with them, Tyce answered “if you try your hardest, no matter the outcome, they know they’ve been successful.” This message explains Tyce’s impact at Pennridge and how his athletes are learning that success isn’t just about finishing first, it’s about showing up for your teammates, pushing through challenges, and giving your all every day.
