The Philadelphia Eagles began the 2025 NFL season with high expectations following recent postseason success with winning Super Bowl LIX. Despite this, their recent performance has left many wondering whether the team can win another championship this season. Even with a roster stacked with a great mix of veterans and promising young players, the Eagles have struggled to find consistency on offense in key moments. As the season progresses, reactions from coaches and fans show a growing concern that Philadelphia is underachieving.
Pennridge High School football coach Adam Tatar was direct in his thoughts of the Eagles’ current issues, pointing first to the coaching staff. He believes the team has failed to adapt. “I think they’re underperforming,” Tatar said. “Their head coach refuses to make any changes. It’s the same picture as it was a couple of years ago before Sirianni gave up playcalling.” He explained that the blame often shifts from one person to another, with many choosing the offensive coordinator, Kevin Patullo, as a big target in the media. Sports media has also shifted criticism toward quarterback Jalen Hurts, and Tatar feels similar. “His issues of why he has been benched in college are showing.” According to him, Hurts still struggles with some full-field reads and adjustments before the play, concerns that date back to his time in college at Alabama. Tatar emphasized his thoughts when talking about how the Eagles lost to the Los Angeles Chargers and QB Justin Herbert, who broke his hand just six days before the game.
Throughout all the madness, Tatar acknowledged positives throughout the season, mostly with the defense. He praised their growth and resilience, saying that the NFL’s structure is designed to make it difficult for teams to maintain great performance in back-to-back seasons. “The continued evolution of the defense is a big one,” he said. Even with all the criticism, he recognized how locker room narratives like A.J. Brown having sideline outbursts tend to overshadow the better things on the field.
For local fan Daisy Vasquez-Martinez, the season has been just as frustrating to watch. “Unfortunately, this season I think their performance has been really bad overall,” she said. “They have a good defense, but their offense isn’t doing the best.” Daisy also addressed the concern that the offense has been stale and unpredictable. “They can change their plays and not do the same ones over and over again,” she said. Despite this, she pointed to some bright spots this season, mentioning when the Eagles blocked a possible game-winning field goal attempt against the Rams to win the game in week three.
As the Eagles approach the rest of the season, the perspectives of coaches and fans remain similar: the team must make meaningful decisions to unlock its full potential. The Philadelphia Eagles are currently at a huge spot: Will they change things around and have a similar ending to last season, or crumble down with a disappointing season?
