Moments before the 200-yard freestyle during a meet in January 2023, Pennridge sophomore Ethan Whitehurst stood behind the starting line. Not pacing around or calling out to teammates. He kept his eyes fixed on the far end of the pool in utter silence. Head coach Jenna Anselmo remembers that moment clearly. “He has always been one of the quieter athletes,” Anselmo said. “But that silence works for him. When he decides to do something, he commits fully.”
Ethan dove in and reached the wall in 1 minute 59 seconds, breaking the two-minute goal for the first time in his career. It was the race that set the tone for his success in the Pennridge program. Months of hard work and dedication paid off.
Ethan Whitehurst has become one of the most important athletes in not just Water Polo and Swim, but Pennridge Aquatics as a whole. Ethan is on both the varsity water polo and swim team, being a captain for the latter. Additionally, Ethan has a strong academic record and a lifeguarding job at the school. As a sophomore, he won the 100-yard backstroke against North Penn in 1 minute 2.82 seconds, also swimming on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay during that same meet. He also Ethan Diving Into The Pool Mid-Air (Swim-Cloud) contributed to Pennridge’s fifth-place finish in the 400-yard free relay at the SOL Colonial Division Championships, where his group achieved a time of 3 minutes 33.16 seconds. Improving even more as a Junior in a January 2024 meet against Souderton, he placed second in the 200-yard freestyle by having a 1 minute 51.67 finish. He also earned district consideration times in the 100 back, 100 freestyle, and 200 free, and also served as the lead-off swimmer on Pennridge’s 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
In water polo, Ethan began competing at the varsity level as early as his freshman year. Listed as a utility and driver with a height of 6 feet and a weight of 160 pounds, he brought strength and hard work to the team. He earned Honorable Mention All-Conference recognition and gained additional experience through the Ridge Raptors club program. His coach noted that his strength and game awareness have increased every season. “His strength has definitely increased,” Anselmo said. “He has learned not to just rely on what comes naturally. He focuses on what he is not as strong at and improves it.”
Eth, Throughout his high school career has had a strong academic record, having to balance AP and honors classes in addition to practices, meets, and work shifts as a lifeguard. Ethan helps to be a mentor to younger athletes and prefers one-on-one conversations instead of large groups at once.
Ethan is quiet, but it has the benefit of causing opposing teams to underestimate his ability, with his coach saying it allows him to show out. He isn’t the most vocal athlete, but he communicates effectively when he has to.
Ethan’s breakthrough Sophomore year race in the 200 freestyle remains a major moment. After all of those weeks of hard work and training, he broke the two-minute mark for the first time, a goal that boosted him to the postseason. “He trained so hard leading up to that race,” Anselmo said. “Seeing him achieve that goal showed how much he can accomplish.”
Ethan leads by example, not just with his individual times and accomplishments. He consistently arrives early to practice, stays late to help break down equipment, and never looks to get out of practice early. Helping to guide the team not from his vocality but from the hard-working example he sets. And as he continues to drop his times, specifically in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, Ethan could qualify for even more postseason competition and garner further interest from college programs. Anselmo believes he has the drive and character to compete at the next level. “The sky is the limit for him,” she said. “He impresses me with all the things he wants to do in life. He is the kind of person I want to see in the world. He is going to do great things.”
If it’s racing in a relay, leading by example for younger swimmers, or pushing through a practice, Ethan Whitehurst exemplifies hard work and leadership in the Pennridge aquatics program. His quiet confidence and strong work ethic have made him a leader and a standout athlete and student. Ethan looks to join the swim team of the college he decides on attending, and further the strong start he has accomplished for himself. No matter where he goes or what he does, his hard-working and determined mentality will ensure that he’ll succeed.
