Sports During COVID-19

Sports at all levels should be played during the coronavirus.  They are great for entertainment whether you are playing them or watching them.  Now more than ever entertainment is a great way to lift the spirits of this country.

There is also another significant factor on why sports need to happen amid the coronavirus, money.  Professional athletes, teams, and the league have lost a huge portion of money this year.  Over the last year the NBA has lost $694 million, the MLB has lost $5.2 billion, and the NFL has lost $2.7 billion.  Many teams have been struggling financially since no fans are allowed in the stadiums. High School sports are also taking a huge hit because of the coronavirus.  The athletes who are trying to get scouted and earn scholarships from colleges are unable to play their full seasons or any season at all.

Many people believe that at any level of sports there is a good chance that the virus will go through the team.  There have been many incidents in the NFL, MLB, and the NBA where teams have gotten the coronavirus and spread it to not only their teammates but other teams.  The NFL spent around $75 million on COVID-19 test this year and they still had outbreaks.  If professional sports leagues have a plethora of money and cannot control the virus then how can high schools protect their athletes from it with a limited amount of money?

The coronavirus should not stop sports from being played.  There is too much at stake for too many people. There are many safety measures put in place such as wearing masks as much as possible and daily COVID tests to limit the spread in professional sports so if they take the same measures in High School sports there should be no issue.  High school athletes and coaches need to take the guidelines seriously if they want to play because if there is one outbreak that sport’s season will be over.
