In New York State’s past election, Zohran Mamdani, a former foreclosure prevention counselor and one-time rapper, was elected to be the new mayor, defeating former Mayor Andrew Cuomo. Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, and moved to New York with his family at the age of seven. He earned a bachelor’s degree in African Studies from Bowdoin College. After college, he worked for a housing company in Queens, counseling residents facing foreclosure and eviction. He also co-founded the college’s first Students for Justice in Palestine and helped organize other organizations across the country, looking to win national elections and expand healthcare coverage. These ventures helped him run for office, where he became the first Ugandan man to serve in the New York State Assembly and the third Muslim to be a part of the Assembly. In Mamdani’s campaign, he pushed to give the small communities, like the Muslims, South Africans, and minorities, a voice. During his campaign for mayor, he proposed several policies, including lower costs of living, free child care, expanding and making bus fares free, and raising the minimum wage to $30 an hour by 2030. According to his campaign, these proposals would be funded by increased taxes on high-income residents.
Mamdanis’ campaign and policy platform have raised mixed responses from voters and political leaders. Former New York State Mayor Andrew Cuomo stated that Mamdani is unprepared to manage the complexities of America’s largest city and that he has made promises that cannot be met. Mamdani has also publicly criticized the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza, which created more mixed responses. However, with Mamdani’s electoral victory, national attention from Republicans has risen, as the city has undergone a dramatic shift to the left.
Due to the controversies surrounding Mamdani, Pennsylvania Sen. Dave McCormick has even invited New Yorkers to relocate to Pennsylvania, and the President and CEO of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry has also suggested that New York businesses consider Pennsylvania as a more stable and cost-effective alternative. Jonathan Edwards, an English teacher at Pennridge High School, said, “The election outcome could influence national conversations and concerns. The effect that it will have for the rest of the country, and the demographics of the vote, can raise questions about what people see the need to prioritize, and what needs of their own are not being met.” Edwards also noted the challenges to funding Mamdani’s proposal. “That is a huge concern, and any implementation of taxes may cause the problem of there always being loopholes in the tax system. Some know how to abuse them, and those who don’t need to abuse them.” Rowan Mahoney, a student at Pennridge who is very invested in politics, was asked how his election could affect his future as a citizen of the country and someone who will have the ability to vote in the coming years. He responded, “Not very much, unless other politicians follow his lead and adopt some of the policies.”
Mamdanis’ electoral victory has created both excitement and concern to see whether he will be able to fulfill the goals he has stated in his campaign. His victory has created a turning point for New York State that is still unfolding. Some believe he can inspire change for New York, and others worry about what things will be like with a new mayor. His bold promises and national attention put him and his team under pressure. With Mamdandi as the new mayor, it signifies a new chapter for the state as he will continue to change and shape New York’s future.
