What Journalism Has Taught Me

Journalism this year has taught me so much, and it was so different from any of my other classes. Each unit was different from the others, and we were given something brand new that I had no experience with each time. This was an important class and I am so happy I got the opportunity to take it my senior year. The skills we learned will be helpful throughout our life and definitely next year in college. This year we learned how to write, how to research, we learned some history, teamwork skills, and we even did a little math. It was an exciting class that always challenged me and I never knew what to expect.

We first learned all the different types of articles that journalists write such as features or editorials. We learned how to title our pieces and how to write our headers for each article. The class allowed for us to be creative in our pieces and taught us how to write outside of our comfort zone. This class has definitely helped me improve upon my writing skills, making each article easier to write than the last. A lot of times we also had the opportunity to write about an issue we were passionate about. During the first semester we had a research project; this taught me a lot about researching and taking notes on important information. I have never researched to this extent before, and this will definitely be helpful next year in college classes. We also got to research about an issue we felt passionate about, this gave us a voice about problems in the school and a place to give our opinions about these issues.

This year, we also did a unit on the history of journalism. I learned so much new information about popular journalists such as Joseph Pulitzer. We learned how journalism formed into what it is today. We also took a close look at how the media handles situations such as scandals, crimes, and celebrities. We saw how the media can sensationalize news, which gave me an entirely new outlook when watching or reading the news. The end of the year we were assigned news groups that we had to work with and write articles. This taught me a lot about teamwork; we all learned how to work together and do the job assigned. Journalism has been one of the best classes I have taken during high school, it taught me so much and gave me skills I will need in the future.
