TikTok: A Different Perspective

TikTok: A Different Perspective

TikTok is one of the most popular and thriving apps of 2021. Originally known as Musically; the app has reinvented itself and holds the attention of millions. With over 200 billion downloads, it’s a unique platform that displays dance, music, art, comedy, and more. Tiktok follows a pattern of many dances and trends that mostly interest Gen Z. According to Business of Apps, TikTok’s main demographics are “over 40 percent of users are 18-24 and a little under 30 percent are 13-17”. Tiktok also has a creator fund where Tiktokers can profit off their content and become ‘Tiktok famous” quickly. Tiktok is also considered different from others like Youtube, Facebook, and Instagram as it does not get copyrighted with songs, and anyone can join and become popular.

While this all sounds great, there are some serious downsides to Tiktok. The app is considered by many to be very addictive. According to Business of Apps, “90 percent of users go on Tiktok every day” and “the average daily time spent on Tiktok is an hour.” Clearly the app is captivating to many, however, some refuse to download the app. I know several people my age who have no interest in the app. So why go against the tide? When asked why she doesn’t have TikTok, PHS senior Danielle Brouse explains, “Personally I see TikTok on every other platform I use” and “I hear it is very addicting”. Overall, she doesn’t think it’s something that she should get into. She instead spends her free time on discord or journaling.  Showing similar regards, when asked what he liked the most about not having Tiktok, PHS senior Christian Beck explains, “With all of social media being addictive, I like not having the urge to go on another app”.

Though both of these individuals don’t have TikTok, they still contain connections to the platform. For example, friends sending them, Youtube, and Instagram reels. These make them accessible without the app downloaded; making binge-watching TikTok’s harder. This all however begs the question: is Tiktok a positive influence? Personally, I believe it is. TikTok can be a welcoming place for all types of content. From information, funny Tiktok trends, new popular music, fashion, small businesses self-promoting, and vine-like content; there’s a lot to offer. Overall, I think it holds a strong impact on society and now an important part of the culture of gen Z. Many create a community and relate to others on the app millions of miles away. Though it can be addicting and understandably something to avoid, even those who don’t download the app see titkoks regularly somehow. So how do you feel about Tiktok?
